One of the smallest individual flowers in my garden, but one of the most magical, the Alyssum or Sweet William (Lobularia maritima) is most commonly found in pure white, but also comes in shades of lilac to violet. It has a perfume resembling that of honey which is strongest in the evening. The tiny flowers are around 5mm (0.2 inch) across and form clusters at the end of short stems. The whole plant rarely grows more than 20 cms (10 in) high. 🙂
Seen up close and magnified with a zoom lens their magical nature can more easily be seen while it is often missed to the casual observer in any garden.
I was reviewing some of my flower photographs a while back and found a picture of these plants, that i have loads of each Spring, and i could not recognise it – i had no clue what it was – the image was a macro and the flowers seemed to be about 2-3 inches across. It took a couple of days before i discovered my mistake. 🙂
(Click on a pic to open in a new window and click again to see enlarged detail!) 🙂 They smell as sweet as they look! 🙂
This flower cluster is around 2.5 cm (1 in) across.

It’s a pleasure to share. I usually share more flower photo’s from my garden, but this summer has been a looooong dry one and the flowers are a bit patchy at the moment! But Autumn should be here any week and hopefully the flowers will return?? 😉

I do hope you get your wish and Autumn will refresh your flower garden once again! Ours are just getting started, in The States. Snowdrops, Daffodils and Jonquils are in bloom presently. 🙂

Half your luck! 😉
Do you have many wild daffodils growing near you? I love the ones bereavedandbeingasingleparent has on his post today.
Thanks for the good wishes. 🙂

We actually saw the squirrels transplanting the daffodil bulbs from our flower bed into the woods beside our driveway, so don’t know if you would consider them wild. They are much better gardeners than me! 😊 Yes, thought his photos quite lovely, too.

Wow! How cool is that??
Maybe they didn’t want you digging yours back up to eat later?? 😉 I suspect they value the bulbs more for food than any Aesthetic beauty?
