Flower of the Day – October 10, 2017 -Tritonia Gladiolaris ‘Rose Lace’

Another one of my plants that comes up in Springtime year after year, with very little care or maintenance apart from watering in summer and a winter rainfall.

I love it for it’s sheer delicate beauty, but when inspecting my photos i noticed something weird!… this flower has ‘pimples’! Look closely at the yellow marks on the lower leaves. 2 out of the 3 have raised ‘pimples’ growing out of the petal – they are not stamens like the ones above but are part of the outer petals! 🙂

They are also confusingly known as ‘Flame Freesias’ and are related to my Ixia i posted earlier while looking rather like local wild Gladioli. All of the named plants belong to the iris family – Iridaceae – which includes the crocus genus.

  1. Thank you Amor, Marilyn and Cee! 🙂

This plant would be very easy to miss or dismiss as it is packed in between more numerous and much larger plants in my garden – but in close up and magnified it is one of the most stunning plants in my garden!

It can be easy to miss the beauty that surounds us sometimes – sometimes you have to look deep! 😉
