FOTD – August 27 – Geraldton Wax bush (Chamelaucium uncinatum)

The Western Australian native plant, the Geraldton Wax(flower) begins to bud in the middle of Winter, when the coldest weather has begun, and blooms before Spring can get started in July/August.

This usually means there can be many days when the buds and fine needle-like leaves can be covered either in morning raindrops or heavy dew. Add some low-rising morning Sunlight and you get a bush covered in ‘diamonds’ shining brightly.

As the weather begins to warm a little the buds begin to open out and the bush becomes covered in little pink 5 petalled ‘stars’. :-).

Turns out the flowers and leaves are edible! I’ll have to try some and report back, although i suspect not many of my readers will have a supply of their own to try.
