FOTD – September 6 – Dutch Iris (Iris X Hollandica)

The first week of September, and in Australia it is also the first week of Spring, and it is also the first week my Dutch iris bulbs have come into flower. 🙂

One of the simpler of the showy irises but it’s colour and delicacy also make it, to me,  one of the most beautiful!

It also ‘holds’ a little secret – See below! 🙂

(Click on a pic to open in a new window and click again to see enlarged detail!) 🙂Dutch Iris have only 3 petals that grow vertically, and 3 sepals (called “Falls”) that grow outwards. 🙂

Each “fall” is aptly named as when the heavier insects like honey bees land on the end of one they will fall down revealing a pollen lined tunnel through which the bee helps to pollinate each flower it visits. The fall is around 6 cm (2 in) long. 🙂

This is the first flower on the stem, but with luck, more flowers will emerge from the bulbous stalk below 🙂
