FOTD – June 24 – Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima)

I bought this plant in a post-Christmas sale for 50c it was in a tiny 40mm ( ~2 in) pot , was around 80 mm (3in) high and had definitely seen ‘better days’. There was a fair chance it would not survive to see the New Year.

6 months later and it has been in show-off mode for over a month now! (It’s Winter Down Under).

This is the closest this Poinsettia is ever going to get to having snow on it’s bracts! We’ve actually had some decent rainfall this month ( the Entire month actually!):-)

    • Am definitely considering this Judy! The tricky part is where i can plant it so it will not burn to a frazzle in the heat of Summer and can be watered…. and where there is a free spot! 😉

      • I built my studio a few feet from where my Xmas poinsettia was planted by a wall so there was only two or three feet between the wall and studio.. It grew into a tree without my realizing it. But yes, you do have more heat than we do in my part of Mexico. Are you in Queensland?

        • I’m In Perth… South West part of country. In Summer we get massive high pressure systems that suck all the hot desert air from 60% of the country and pours it over onto us!

        • Generally they do pretty well outside – it’s only really 10-15 days a year we have ‘bad’ hot weather, but they do need watering almost daily Dec – May.

Am thinking about bringing this one inside – never had one as a house plant before. 🙂

  1. It’s a beautiful plant which I remember my mum always bought at X-mas. We call it Julstjärna in Swedish and use it as a plant for inside. I’ve seen it also here in Malta but never had one myself.

    • It is a very ‘Christmassy’ plant, especially in the USA. I normally have some outside in pots but am thinking of bringing this one inside as it’s so pretty. 🙂
