Flower of the Day – December 3 – Dandelion (Dent de Lion).

Normally in Spring i rip these plants out by the roots as soon as i see the yellow bud about to open and try to catch them before they release the hundreds of floating seed ‘parachutes’ that will reset more and ever more of these weeds in my lawns and garden beds.

The name comes from the Latin then into the French Dent de Lion (Tooth of the lion) regarding the jagged edge to the leaves.

This was one of the rare ones to reach ‘maturity’ and had already begun to sow more seeds of doom.

But having seen how utterly magnificent these creations are up close i might consider being a little more lenient….. i MIGHT….. 🙂

The jagged teeth on the inner spines of each seed designed to ‘catch’ on to a secure landing point are just one of the amazing feature of these ‘flowers’.

In my childhood days we used to know these as ‘Clock Flowers’ because it was supposed to tell you what time in the afternoon it was by how many breaths it took to blow all the seeds off! 🙂

  2. When I was a kid, we used to blow the seeds off dandelions too. The number of seeds left on was supposed to tell you how many children you were going to have! My mom used to serve the greens slightly wilted with a sweet/sour hot bacon dressing.

    • Hahahaha! NOW – maybe?

      Back in my younger days, i’d be telling you it was 3 o’clock! (or 4 or 2 depending!) 😉

      It is such a beautiful structure – even though it has had it’s head ‘chopped’ off. 🙂

    • Yikes!

      I just had to check the Met Office records… we last had a ‘drop’ of rain on 23 Nov and before that on 5th and the 23rd of October – under 1/10th of an inch each time.

      The last actual rainfall we had was 19 October – 1/8th of an inch.

      Now the dry months start! 😦

      The garden is looking a wee bit brown and sparse at the moment. You bring your flowers indoors from the cold – we bring them indoors to cool down. (Not Fry!)
