Flower of the Day – November 28 – Orange Trumpet Vine (Pyrostegia venusta)

My orange trumpet vine, sometimes known as the flamevine, is a member of the Bignonia family of flowering vines/plants and covers a small pergola arch leading down to my lower lawn area. It usually flowers en masse in June (Winter) and lasts until September and is a spectacular sight of brilliant orange mingled with a little green. In early November I noticed it had begun a much lesser second season flowering and caught the unusual shaped* flower against a bright, late Spring, blue sky. 🙂

The first flowering of this Winter’s season.

* As i was checking the images had posted correctly, i noticed something even more unusual than ‘usual’ 😉 Normally each flower comes from a circular base but morphs into a square shaped tube at it’s opening! Three sides of the tube are single petals but the top ‘side’ bifurcates (splits into two) resulting in a bow shaped lip making a total of 5 petal endings. The unusual part is in the middle of the top pic – one flower has 6 tips and a 5 sided tube, making a pentagonal opening, not the regular square shape? It happens again in the centre of the second pic.
