Poppies similar to these grew over the silent battlefields of Europe after World War 1 ended (The Armistice was signed by the Allies and Germany 100 years ago today!).
The remembrance poppy is an artificial poppy worn in remembrance of the soldiers who died in the Great War and is based upon this flower. It’s colour is said to symbolise the blood shed by so many soldiers and civilians on both sides.
