Love and Understanding

Alchemy-of-the-Heart

Love is kind of a huge subject and one of much discussion and varying levels of meaning. This is evidenced by the mass of visual or reading material devoted to Love as the core subject or idea being considered, revealed, written about, usually as expressed between, or felt by, two different people who either become ‘united’ as one, or are torn apart and basically destroyed as worthwhile individuals when it all goes ‘wrong’.

Love is generally agreed to be an emotional state of both our physical and emotional body, usually an euphoric one, although not without some degree of tragedy being involved: a risk, or a loss – the loss can then lead to a feeling of love turning into a deep depression. People who fall in and out of love frequently share some symptoms with those of bipolar or manic mental disorders.

Love is strongly associated in people’s minds with the state of happiness and/or contentment. Love is also strongly associated with the union of two compatible (to varying degrees) individuals, although some feel something similar between themselves and a member of a different species such as cats or dogs, or with relatives, particularly close family members such as parents or children.

It’s fair to say humans have several different kinds of love – that the single term ‘Love’ encompasses a wide range of situations and feelings.

Understanding as a term is something else altogether. Understanding is largely not about emotion but about logical thought and analytical thought. It is almost solely a mental process (part of our mental ‘body’) leading to some kind of ‘result’ or conclusion that holds a form of truth in it. A truth that should ideally be of some use or purpose to us as an individual, to help us in our day to day dealings with others like us and the environment we live in/have to operate in.

It is interesting then that our human dualistic nature of thinking and feeling is frequently expressed in a single sentence that uses both of these two distinct words.

That sentence being: ” I want to KNOW(Understand) what LOVE is.”

I gotta take a little time, a little time to think things over
I better read between the lines, in case I need it when I’m older
Now this mountain I must climb, feels like the world upon my shoulders
Through the clouds I see love shine, it keeps me warm as life grows colder
In my life there’s been heartache and pain
I don’t know if I can face it again
Can’t stop now, I’ve traveled so far, to change this lonely life
I want to know what love is, I want you to show me
I want to feel what love is, I know you can show me
I’m gonna take a little time, a little time to look around me
I’ve got nowhere left to hide, it looks like love has finally found me
In my life there’s been heartache and pain
I don’t know if I can face it again
Can’t stop now, I’ve traveled so far, to change this lonely life
I want to know what love is, I want you to show me
I want to feel what love is, I know you can show me
I want to know what love is, I want you to show me
(And I want to feel) I want to feel what love is
(And I know) I know you can show me
Let’s talk about love, I want to know what love is
The love that you feel inside, I want you to show me
And I’m feeling so much love, I want to feel what love is
No, you just can’t hide, I know you can show me
I want to know what love is (let’s talk about love), I know you can show me
I want to feel it too, I want to feel what love is
I want to feel it too, and I know and I know, I know you can show me
Show me love is real, yeah, I want to know what love is

KNOW is something you THINK (in your mind).

LOVE is something you FEEL (with All of your being).

There is something quite distinct about each. Each requires the operation of significantly different types of activity within our single body. Being able to fully love at the same time as being able to fully understand might not be possible for the average human body.

They are not necessarily mutually exclusive but may require an exceptional amount of discipline, practice and study (rather like getting a Martial Art perfected) before we can come close to achieving them simultaneously.

You can love something/one (ideally unconditionally, although this is rare in practice). You may not understand why you do.

You can try to understand something/one (love for example?) You may not love the result of your understanding/reasoning.

Doing both at the same moment?

Tricky – to say the least. 🙂

I believe that all love stems from a single over-arching concept. A ‘Universal’ Love that unites our unique, single, separate self with everything else in existence. Past, Present and Future.

The loves we feel are our attempt to bring that connection between our separated selves and everything outside of us closer together to enable us to feel more ‘complete’, more connected to something – something we usually cannot fully conceive of or fully understand: To feel less ‘alone’.

It is our very deepest, most basic (if not necessarily our most immediate) desire of our Heart – and of our Mind.

As explained above these two, heart and mind, don’t usually work hand in hand, second by second.
Frequently they are out of sync. 😦

If we can get a grasp on the concept of ‘Higher Love’ ( (“Think about it there must be a) Higher Love”: Steve Winwood) then maybe we could better understand just what ‘our’ love is, and what it is all about?

love.
