Flower of the Day – October 12 – Pink Pelargonium

The common name of the flowers of the genus Pelargonium is the geranium, however Geranium is actually the name of another genus in the same family which are commonly called Crane’s Bill (for their long thin seed pod said to resemble the bill of the bird). As a way of distinguishing between the two similar plants the Pelargoniums are known as Stork’s Bill’s – although personally i have enough difficulty telling a stork from a crane, let alone their bills!

The Greek name for a stork was Pelargos and for a Crane, Geranos. They’re particularly well-suited to the warm temperate climates we have here in Australia and also in S Africa.

It’s highly likely that any plant you know as a geranium is in fact a pelargonium! 🙂
