This most unusual flower is native to Australia and flowers profusely in Spring as the warmer weather approaches. 🙂 It is a member of the Myrtle family and is sometimes known by the name Melaleuca.
Callistemon can grow either as a bush (as in this case) or as a tree of some 5-8 metres (15-25ft) in height and is often completely covered in these tube like flowers that range from pinks to deep reds depending upon the species. (Although the deep red ones tend to ‘fade’ in the strong Australian sunshine just before they drop their stamen). This one is pretty typical and measures some 12cm long by 6cm in diam. (5×2.5 inch)
A Callistemon bud is at the top of the photo with the fully open flower beneath.
