Native to Australia this Grevillea (one of some 360 species) looks more like some weird alien invader.

A clever plant – it has quite large flowers for show and to attract the birds and insects but has very narrow curled spines instead of petals to reduce fluid loss in the hot summer conditions. By opening just a few at a time of the long curling stem full of spines it attracts birds for a long time – each flower is in partial bloom for around a month or so!
