Donald Trump and the Bible

students-are-freaking-out-on-yik-yak-after-donald-trump-swore-and-flubbed-a-bible-verse-during-a-speech-at-a-christian-universityDonald Trump in Aug 2015 at an evangelical campaign rally in Michigan has said that the Bible is his favourite book.

“It’s (His own book – Art of the Deal) my second favorite book of all time. Do you know what my first is? The Bible! Nothing beats the Bible,”

Once he got what he wanted from the voters he was conning he later reverted to form and placed two of his own books back at the top of his favourite’s list.

But the real point here is that Donald might actually think the Bible is a Good Book, it’s just apparent in his actions that he sees it mostly as a fictional, rather than instructional, work. It has some fun stories, as DT might put it. It clearly is NOT his handbook of How to Behave as a Human Being. Or maybe he’s only read the first half and hasn’t quite got to the bit where the good guy comes in and changes the old script for a New Way of Living.

The Donald has also been quoted as saying his favourite verse from the entire Bible is: “An Eye for an Eye!” so he clearly never read where the Chief Christian in Christianity (in fact it is named after Him!) told us in Matthew Ch 5:

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him two. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. (Vs 38-42)

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in Heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in Heaven is perfect. (Vs 43-48)

Ahhh, but what would He know? Right??

I could go on about meekness and humbling one’s self, seeking not the things/treasure, like gold and silver, of this world but building up instead treasures for the next, or how we should always let our yes be yes and our no be no and a whole bunch of other Biblical, or more exactly, New Testament examples DT breaks seemingly daily, but it probably won’t achieve very much, if at all.

It’s not entirely Biblical but my sainted Mother always told me: “If you can’t say something nice about someone then don’t say anything at all”.

Sorry Mum!

  1. I don’t know why Christians believe that Jews can’t tell the difference between a good guy and a bad one. JESUS WAS A JEW. Please try to remember that. It would make conversations less troublesome.

It’s not about “The Book.” It’s about the people.

  2. I think there is a major problem with ‘ turn the other cheek ‘ that the saner ‘ an eye for an eye ‘ has not got. If we believe in a just war , and even Mr Cornyn believes that, turn the other cheek is total pacifism. In the real world it will not work , tyrants will laugh in your face and ride all over you. You cannot blame Donald for not following the Bible ; who does? The label Christian is as wide as the ocean stretching from pious souls who lead almost blameless lives, to those who barely keep to the rules but stumble along.

    • Of course there is a problem with the Message of Christ, if there was not ever man would love his neighbour as himself, the world would by now be at peace and war would no longer exist. Similarly there is a problem with an eye for an eye that turning the other cheek does not have (revenge, war, death follows death follows death, etc etc.) and sane men are free to choose one or the other. Sadly, in our countries we have to live mostly as the leader so determines according to his favouritism and or hypocrisy. I do not personally believe any war is just as my choice is to believe Christ had the true answer to living on this planet… it should be shunned over living for a greater purpose than this world can supply but that for the brief time we are on the planet we should do only good things – for others first, and then, if possible without causing harm to others, for ourselves or family. I do not blame Donald for not following the Bible – that’s a free choice. I blame him for the massive hypocrisy in saying to voters it is his favourite book before the election then telling the truth afterwards. That Donald is Donald’s favourite author. And for saying his favourite line is an eye for an eye when Christ himself told us that was NOT the way he wants us to be! What part of matthew do so-called christians just not get. Do the 10 commandments mean nothing to those people?? Does the 2 Commandments of Jesus mean likewise? Then how in God’s name dare they use the term ‘christian’???

I agree with your last comment but it disturbs me greatly that those who aren’t claim to be.

Just for the record i would be every bit as hypocritical if i claimed to BE christian – i don’t – i just think and believe that Christ has the best idea of how those who claim to follow Him should live their life – while it lasts. After observing human nature for over 50 years i see that the hypocrisy is not limited by any means to self named christians – human nature is pretty much universal.

      Thanks again for the comment/interest.

      • ‘ Human nature is pretty much universal ‘ correct and just what constitutes that nature? I think an eye for an eye matches our sense of justice accurately. We are tribal by nature , not by choice , you cannot chose your nature although you may regret it. The Biblical tribe were the old testament Jews and so they rejected the teaching of Jesus Christ. The concept of justice comes from the human conscience and that is because we are self-aware and hence self judgemental. The whole edifice of law in the western democracies is based on a system of punishment proportional to wrong doing.
Unless we believe in an afterlife there can be no ultimate justice as a simple examination of experience tells us, so many religions use that teaching pie in the sky not meat on the plate. Rebirth is another way of assuring ultimate moral justice.
The term Christian act is no longer the act of a Christian but any neighborly act by anyone, the word has infiltrated into our culture.
It’s not that to quote you ‘ The so called Christians do not understand Matthew ‘ but they are unable to act in a way that denies human nature, and that is hardly surprising.

  3. Marilyn,

i checked and rechecked my post – i never mentioned or implied anywhere anything about Jews – i did not even mention the name???

Having read every word in the Christian Testament several times (along with just about all the Jewish one) i am totally aware that Jesus was born a Jew and lived as one, was sent to gather the remnant of the flock (his sheep) who were all Jews in heart. I have NO ‘issue’ with that at all. Knowing this i still think Christ was one of the greatest men ever reported to have lived ( i have no personal evidence other than writings by others that He actually did live/die/ live again – eternally).

I really have no clue what you are referring to here?

    (a confused) love.

  4. While history shows this to be mostly true, i still choose to believe some can learn from it and overcome their own ego and self – in time and with considerable effort…. if they so choose and persevere.
