The World (OK – My world) is a little brighter this morning!
Sure it’s a little greyer than yesterday and the forecast is for a thunderstorm later, but that matters not a whit (and we can always use rain this time of year!) 🙂
What matters is that…. WE HAVE A NEW STATE GOVERNMENT!!! A New Hope, after 8 and a half loooong years. the Good Guys finally won. Not only won but handed the losers the biggest drubbing ever seen in WA politics. Not only that but the nationalistic, right wing, muslim-hating, anti-immigration party, who were hoping for a Donald Trump style voter backlash and support, that was polling at around the 12-13% level before the election, got just 4.8% of the vote and instead of a predicted 3 seats (and likely deadlock breaking role) in the upper house just managed to scrape in with one…. just! 😀
After what happened in the UK and the US recently there were fears the polls showing the needed 10% swing against the incumbent party might be wrong and there was a chance they would be returned after making a desperate decision to align with the nationalists of One Nation and share preferences with them in a bid to garner the anti-establishment vote for themselves (the Establishment!)??
It failed! – spectacularly!
The new (left) government went from being 10 seats behind last time to 20 seats ahead now ( with only 59 seats in the state). They have twice the number of seats than the two coalition parties that used to be in government have combined.
For the first time in over 50 years my own electorate voted for the winning party!
For the first time in 40 years (as long as i have been enrolled to vote) MY vote counted as part of the winning one!
A truly great day and one that should give anyone New Hope after recent events.
Sometimes the Good Guys Can Win!
This was not only a win for me and my state but also for Decent Democracy – we voted for the PEOPLE and not the Mining Companies that fought with all they had to prevent this result. We voted for non-privatisation of essential government services and utilities. We voted largely against fear and isolationism in favour of justice for all while being sensible about our own safety and offering charity to those who cannot live safely in their own country’s. And we also voted the way our polls said we would – only better!
There is still some sanity left in the world and i can breathe more freely and deeply of that sweet, if salt-sprayed air today. It has a tinge of summer rain about it too and that’s just fine by me 🙂
Outside there are clouds gathering; seems the forecast might be right today as well?
But i see a bright ray of Hope even so!
You’ve got the reins now guys – there is a massive job ahead to dig ourselves out of the $41 billion debt they left us with and to try and get our AAA+ credit rating back that they cost us – don’t blow it!
Do me and all Western Australians proud.
