One of my favourite bloggers, Christian, recently posted something i have often read and now have on my Blogpage as a creed for me to always bear in mind and do my best to follow.
The PROBLEM is – when i tried to find it in my searchable pc Bible (the KJV version)…
it simply did not EXIST!!!
It seems that the difficulty is a transposition of a single term…
The KJV says all those Good things that Love is… are really all what CHARITY is!!!
How many of you see ‘Love’ and think ‘Charity’ – or vice versa’??
Oh sure – we’re all so wise AFTER the thing has been pointed out to us 😉
HA! Yes we are wiser after the fact…funny!
Charity, with the right intent and motive, is definitely an expression of love.
Charity with self in mind isn’t really charity at all. It is self serving.

I like lots of translations, but the NIV and the NASB ae my favorite, I am guessing that the translators spoke my language..but then I like the message too but it makes me think of another life..oh man! what ever is working for you LOve! Charity real charity comes from Love…and God is love…so when ever I doubt HIS character or heart..I fill him in all those places and it gives a perfect picture of HIM…I am so simple minded…and tired tonight, but I really wanted to stop here tonight! Hope you have an awesome day! G’night

I’m with b4dguy…and the NASB is very close the original language. 😉

Bob, you are too kind. Thanks for the link.
I’m glad you like that poem but I think Paul’s words at the beginning and end of it are worth reflecting upon:

Dang it! I missed 11 and 12. Those numbers can sure be distracting.

Numbers? I see no numbers? I never get distracted by numbers! 😉
And i did find and read the entire Chapter (1 Cor 13 for those looking – well worth re-reading) and could say much on the last para – but, for now, i’ll stay shtum! 🙂

On Second thought….
READ what Paul says there. St Paul who was the greatest single contributor to our New Testament Scripture (in terms of number of books Authored).
There can be NO DOUBT that Paul had received the Gift of Holy Spirit – that He believed on Jesus – and yet what did he write of Himself???
“ALL THAT I NOW KNOW is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely!!!”
Let no Christian fool themselves they are greater than Paul was in his writing of Our Scripture.. He knew everything INcompletely – and that includes Jesus.
Actually this point is too important to leave as just a comment.

I have a little time again while my husband is cooking his wonderful BBQ Shrimp for our company. Do I hear a collective sigh of admiration from the wives and gasp from the husbands =)?
Well, anyway I’m very appreciative!
I also appreciate yours and everyone else’s comments here and agree with all.
All (including you) are probably already aware that the word the KJV translates ‘charity’ is ‘agape’ in the original language. It’s the same word translated elsewhere as ‘love’ even in the KJV. I don’t know why they changed it to ‘charity’ in some passages (maybe because it was applied to humans instead of God?) but it is the same word characterizing God’s love in passages like Eph. 3:19 (love of Christ) and 1 Jn. 4:8 (God is love).
2 Peter 1:7 is also interesting since it has another Gr. word for love,(‘phileo’)that seems to be a ‘building block’ to ‘agape’. They are there translated ‘brotherly kindness’ and ‘charity’ respectively. In every other translation I had available the latter was translated ‘love’.
I think in our modern perception of ‘charity’, brotherly kindness (being acted upon) is more how we’d define it.
But God’s love goes beyond that to be the kind of selfless love that will not only give to meet others’ needs, but sacrifice our own if necessary to help others in theirs(Jn. 15:13).
Another thing I discovered today related to your ‘7 sins’ posts. This AM I came across Mk. 7:18-23. It gives a more extensive list of the things within man that can defile him. There are more than 7 for sure in vs. 21, but none I can see could ever characterize God. One that is defined as ‘envy’ in some translations is more correctly translated ‘covetousness’ in KJV. I couldn’t find any use of that word (Gr. or Heb.)applied to God or Christ (as ‘zeal’ was in our other discussion).
It’s a longer list, but it’s Jesus’ actual teaching on the subject, and I think He’s making the exact points you have been regarding our human weaknesses.
Yes, we are imperfect, and our knowledge is incomplete, but as we yield to the work of His Spirit in us, we are ‘being perfected’ (Phil 1:6)and will someday stand faultless before Him (by His imparted righteousness), mature and complete (1 Cor. 13:9-12).
I just pray I’m cooperating with the ‘growing up’ in His love part (Eph. 2:15 =)!!
I also pray and believe we ALL are as we enter into these exchanges of thoughts, ideas, experiences, and scriptures.
Thanks for initiating it to allow lovetobringustoghether =)!!

Laz – have i told YOU lately that i Love you? 🙂
and that is not ‘just’ me being ‘charitable’ 😉
Throw a shrimp on that barbie for me! 🙂
By the way – Jesus has to be involved in ALL of the work on us – but are we just going to sit by and let Him do it ALL?? or should we ‘pitch in’ too.
I am sure you are growing in Love Daily, D 🙂
and you certainly help me to!
I think also that what the writers of the KJV knew as ‘Charity’ is similar to but not exactly what we today think of as ‘Charity’
A Telethon is a kind of Charity today – they did not exist back then 😉
(Even American Idol is doing charity for Pete’s sake 🙂 )
or maybe for their own sake? – that is NOT what Charity/Love is as i think Tam pointed out here somewhere? 🙂
KJV speaks most clearly to me bacause i am English by birth btw.
Americans speak ‘funny’ 🙂
