courage Look up courage at Dictionary.com
c.1300, from O.Fr. corage, from V.L. *coraticum, from L. cor “heart,” which remains a common metaphor for inner strength. In M.E., used broadly for “what is in one’s mind or thoughts,” hence “bravery,” but also “wrath, pride, confidence, lustiness,” or any sort of inclination. Replaced O.E. ellen, which also meant “zeal, strength.”

To Hearten – give or from one’s heart.

Discourage? – no we are not discouraged yet – just a little less than clear on what i tried to say (both in my writing and in my mind… Thanks for that – Jerk! lol).

I am clear that many of us in our need to do God’s work end up doing the ‘opposite’ (in MY view/reality).

But others are there to hold up a mirror to my own actions/self?

As i was encouraging others not to discourage others i was discouraging them from walking their OWN path – eewwwww!

So what did i mean/should i have said? Oh Great Wiser one?

“Do what you do do well, but first sort out your own acts FULLY by yourselves, that you not pervert others from truth”????

  5. me a jerk..outrageous!

It gets me when a semi-universal instuction is unable to live up to its own instruction.

had someone ever discouraged you from doing something that you really thought you should, and then got yer butt handed to you as a result? You yourself rightly discourage certain things. It also seems as though when someone acts like their ideas aren’t that important, or they don’t encourage me to at least listen to the quality of the discouragement, then I presume that they themselves find their own ideas weak or less than useful, which is hardly a selling point to me.

I have, recently, been positively discouraged. And I appreciate it.

    Is that discouraging?

  6. so you can pin down ants and insects but not the words that describe them huh??? 😉

    Point taken, ‘Jerk’ 🙂

Having said that let me point out this…

When you were positively discouraged… what lesson did you learn and what lesson did you miss and which would give you the greater PERSONAL benefit????

  7. Words are bendy, right, but only when I want them to mean something different than they do in that context. Or that’s how it usually goes. It can be very discouraging, or something like it.

Rev22 banned me from their site. Which is positive discouragement. There are plenty of things to be said, and there is enough ascerbic material on the site, and if I am too ascerbic for them…well…it’s hard to be heard if people just don’t want to listen..just because you show up with a verbal scimitar.

what was the point you pointed out?

As for what lesson I missed…That’s like asking where I left the watch that I lost.

Greater personal benefit: nothing I have ever experienced that was just me going my way doing my thing has ever been of the greater personal benefit.

Have you arrived where you have only because you settled in the land of Nod (wandering)? Or were there roadblocks presented by people which, in retrospect, you appreciated?

I was saying… when you listened to the one (human?) who gave you your ‘positive discouragement’, did you follow your path… or ‘his/hers’?.. We learn best by being allowed to make our own mistakes don’t we? Not by listening to the wise words others have to tell us to ‘save’ us from any perceived harm.?

I know i get confused easily but it usually sounds so good before i say it out loud! 😉

You are right in saying that we nearly always learn from our mistakes, howevah, we also notice the fact that we did not listen to people to whom we should have listened, and, if in the future we need help or advice, we return to the people who’s ideas were cohesive with reality.

As well, you are giving wise words which instruct to not give wise words.

Love conquers fear, love comes from out of the heart in man, fear comes from the ‘unknown’.
Courage as defined above is all about Heart.

Our head gives us the knowledge to overcome the unknown and our heart gives us the courage to Love. With those two working in harmony together nothing should ever ‘hold us back’.

That goes for atheists and theists/Christians alike!

Love Will Bring Us Together. 😉

  17. So what is it when we decide (to) tackle the unknown… without knowledge ?

In a word – i’d have to say: Dumb! 😉

If we only use our hearts to decide our actions without running things by our minds to test for accuracy or error (lies) it is not bravery, it is like J said, just nuts ( actually they are somewhat below our hearts on the human anatomy scale huh? 😎 )

Too much testosterone! (well that’s MY excuse lol)

WE need knowledge of The Lord to help us stay true to ‘oursleves’ (desire to be reunited and walk with God). As well as Love of God to be fearless in the face of the great Unknown.

Either one without the other can lead us we know not where! 😉
